Pastrami and Rye, Perfect Together

The interaction of the pastrami and rye jumped to a new zenith today with the merging of the two at Spread Bagelry in Philadelphia.

Spread has made an arrangement with Katz's Deli in New York to smuggle their pastramis to Philly and have Spread cook them in their wood-fired oven, the same place their amazing rye bagels are finished up in.

The result is the best pastrami sandwich on the planet. Hands down. You can just get it with mustard or as a "special."

But, do not make it an every day habit. You'll grow faster than water being pushed into a balloon.

Spread is at 262 S 20th Street in the Rittenhouse Square section of Philadelphia. If you go say hi to Larry and don't eat 48 hours before.

Here in the Chianti region of Tuscany, there is a former Monkery that now houses Badia Coltibuono, one of the leading winemakers in the area.

But the bonus is that do a region cooking class which I took yesterday.

We make orecchiette with a simple tomato sauce along with a pork roast, chocolate moose and different types of bread.

We had the please of actually eating what we made paired with their amazing 2004 Reserva.

Although the entire took 7 hours, I could the other 5 for recovery.....what a feast!!

The first "12 Hours In" is all over!

Up early and on a first class seat on a non-stop from PHL to LAX featuring an omelet. Yes, that's the way it was introduced to me.

I asked, "What kind of omelet?" The answer? "I think it's cheese."

How hard would it have been to have the Chef that made it let the person that writes the menu know exactly what is in the egg mixture so the person on the front line, the food soldier at 34,000 feet, can make the customer make an acceptable choice and not feel as though they are being offered an inferior product.

This is exactly the difference between a well run airline and U S Airways. So many small things that could make the experience better that would not cost anything!

OK, I am off the soapbox (for now).....back to the day.

I had a very nice seat mate that was on her way back home to Orange County via LA. She was a woman that was going back to school to learn Art History now that her kids are grown.

With U S Air, there is no entertainment so you actually can have a conversation with someone in addition to reading, iPod movie watching/music listening were required.

All was well and we arrived at LAX right on time

I did the usual after that, got on the Dollar RAC shuttle, got the car (choice of 10 cars!...took the Ford something) and off I went via back roads to the Santa Monica Farmer's Market on Main Street.

If you've never been there, you have to go! It is the best place to be in SoCal on Sunday morning.

Fantastic brunch food, freshly made, fresh produce and unusual food items along with great people watching, music and pony rides for the kids.

After the SMFM and a visit with friends, it was off to Dodger Stadium to see the Phillies and Dodgers.

With the help of Jason "Speed Eater" Gurwin's super-charged, in-car GPS that searched routes based on current traffic, we headed out the 10 East towards a possible redevous with what we thought would be tradjic traffic.

The television programmers had scheduled the Lakers-Magic NBA final playoff game at the Staple Center on ABC at the same time as the ESPN game of the week at Dodger Stadium.

If you are familiar with the location of those two places, you know that traffic on a good day is close to a suicidal experience let alone if there are major events occuring at the same time.

But, to our surprise, almost no traffic! Sweet! The SoCal driving Gods were with us!

Then to Dodger Stadium where yes, there is sushi for sale and beach balls flying through the air.

Great seats on the 1st base line in right field, excellent area for foul balls! Then we sat down with my friend Bruce Breger www.mlsonline.com his girlfriend from South Africa, his nephew who is a star collegiate baseball player and his friend. After a quick beer run (no Dodoger Dog for me...too full from pancakes, bacon and corn on the cob at the FM) we watched as the Phillies proceeded to pound the Dodgers into oblivion!

The real fun started when we started talking to our seat mates on the other side from us.

Two Dudes with beer. one with groovy shades (that ended up being an porn film editor) and the other, a University of Miami graduate (aka, party guy) Adam Furberg who is now a stand-up comedian! See the video above for some of his banter.

It's 8pm PT and bottom of the 8th. In true LA fashion, we left the game (7-2 Phils) and off to dinner.

Where? Where else? The In and Out Burger location next to LAX. Anticipation of yummy burgers and fries to make me relax on the red eye back to Philly.

As usual, they did not disappoint! Great fast food at ridiculous prices.

Off to Terminal One, onto the plane and back home. 12 Hours In LA to go with 12 Hours On U S Airways!

Slept well the next night!

Bay Area Trip Begins

I got back from my ice hockey game at around 1am and tossed and turned until the alarm rang at 5.

Showered, shaved, packed, ate and drove to PHL and took leg 1, in an exit row, 737-800 on Delta with leather seats and where they even had movies and headsets for two bucks!

On approach, I save the giant copper mine that has a beautiful gold color from the sky and marveled over the Rocky topography!

Arrived SLC where it is sunny and has snow on the mountaintops!

Going to eat a Squatters Pub (recommended by ground personnel as the best food in the airport, then off to the gate to fly off to San Jose.

12 Hours In..........the Bay Area
